Blog #7- BBG Chapter 9
I choose to read chapter 9, “Revising & Remixing Your Work”. As the title suggests, this chapter talks about revising one’s work. During my first day of ENC class, we did a brainstorming exercise where we wrote down whatever comes to mind for three questions the professor assigned to us. The purpose of the exercise was to teach us how to brainstorm and write shitty first drafts. This activity, along with the reading assignment “Shitty First Drafts”, taught me that it was okay to write all my ideas down for my first draft, even if it is terrible. This chapter reinforces that idea, but also explains the next step in creating a composition, which is revising your work. Revising your composition gives you the chance to take the ideas in the first draft, clarify the purpose, and make it more audience-focused. You can revise it using your own observations, and peer review. Revising your own work will allow you to develop a habit of reflecting critically on your compositions. However, because you may be working on it for so long, you may not be able to review your work as well as a fresh pair of eyes would. Having a peer review your work will allow them to give you advice on how well your work is coming along, and whether you have clearly expressed your purpose. The ideas that were once jotted down in a shitty first draft will become a clear, focused composition that reader will be able to connect to.
